GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A man is facing multiple charges, including driving while impaired, in connection to a crash on Monday afternoon that critically injured a 4-year-old, according to a Greensboro Police Department news release.
Around 1:09 p.m., GPD officers, Greensboro firefighters and Guilford County EMS were sent to the crash on Burlington Road near Maxfield Road.
Police determined Dominick Ravon Isley, 33, of Greensboro, was driving a Kia east on Burlington Road when he went left of center and crashed into a Kenworth flatbed truck.
The driver of the Kenworth was left with a minor injury and did not go to the hospital.
The 4-year-old passenger in the back of the Kia wasn’t restrained properly and suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The child was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, police say.
Isley is being treated for minor injuries and will be taken to the Guilford County Jail on charges of:
driving while impaired
felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury
felony serious injury by vehicle
driving while license revoked
child restraint violation
driving left of center
‘Had a Guy Break Down in Tears’
FOX8 spoke with a witness to the crash. He said it’s a sound he won’t forget.
“I just heard … a loud boom,” Kieran Nunez said.
He said he was working when it happened, and he dropped everything to run outside to help.
“I tried to do the best that I could to get them out of there. I tried to bang open the windshield … It was already done in, but I tried to bust it up. … That wasn’t really working,” Nunez said.
Nunez said he needed to see how many people were inside the car.
“I took a peek inside just to see what the driver was looking like, and I saw the passenger door was open, so from there, I unlocked the doors, and when I went and looked around … that’s when I saw the, I guess, four-year-old kid,” he said.
He said bystanders were distraught that a child was involved.
“We had a guy break down in tears. It wasn’t pretty,” Nunez said.
