[06-17-26] Woman Faces DWI Charge After Crash Injures 2 on Moped in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A woman was arrested after two people were hurt in a crash early Sunday morning, according to Greensboro police.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, police, fire and EMS crews responded to a crash with serious injuries on Spring Garden Street, near Eula Street.

Police say Makayla Kaitlynn Ouboun Theng, of Graham, was driving a Lexus SUV west on Spring Garden Street ahead of a man and woman on a moped heading the same direction on Spring Garden. The SUV made a U-turn in front of the moped, leading to a collision.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Nationally, motorcyclists remain significantly overrepresented in traffic fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle fatalities reached an all-time high in recent years, with 6,335 deaths recorded in 2023, accounting for roughly 15% of all traffic fatalities despite motorcycles making up only 3% of registered vehicles.

In North Carolina, the data presents a slightly more nuanced picture. While overall traffic fatalities in the state saw a rise in 2024, motorcycle-specific deaths actually showed a modest improvement. According to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles’ 2024 Traffic Crash Facts report, motorcyclist fatalities dropped from 202 in 2023 to 193 in 2024, a decline of about 4.5%.

However, this decrease in deaths is tempered by a 3% increase in motorcyclist injuries during the same period, suggesting that while the severity of some crashes may be decreasing, the frequency of accidents resulting in harm remains a persistent challenge for the state.

The primary drivers behind North Carolina’s motorcycle accidents mirror many national trends but are exacerbated by local traffic patterns. Speeding remains the deadliest factor, contributing to over 21% of all traffic fatalities statewide in 2024, followed closely by alcohol impairment, which played a role in nearly 21% of fatal crashes. Additionally, “inattention” was the most frequently cited contributing circumstance in statewide crashes.
