Police and deputies are investigating after a pickup truck crashed into an unmarked Cumberland County detective’s car overnight.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker arrived at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Rock Spring and Montclair roads. Investigators said it happened after a pickup truck ran a stop sign and hit the detective’s car, causing it to flip.

Investigators said the detective’s car flipped into the front yard of another uniformed Cumberland County deputy.

The detective was taken to a medical facility for treatment and has since been released, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said. The Fayetteville Police Department is investigating the crash.

TRUCK ACCIDENT STATISTICS

On a national scale, recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reflects a slight cooling of the post-pandemic surge in traffic fatalities, though the numbers remain high. In 2023, there were approximately 5,472 fatalities in crashes involving large trucks, marking an 8% decrease from the previous year. Despite this drop, large trucks still account for about 9% of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes, even though they represent only 5% of registered vehicles.

A critical and consistent trend is the vulnerability of those in smaller vehicles. Roughly 70% of those killed in large-truck collisions are occupants of other vehicles, while about 18% are truck occupants and 12% are non-occupants (such as pedestrians or cyclists).

In North Carolina, the data for 2024 shows a state grappling with rapid population growth and increased freight demand. According to FMCSA and NCDOT reports, the state recorded 4,992 non-fatal crashes and 135 fatal crashes involving large trucks in 2024.

While overall traffic fatalities in the state rose by 2.7% to a total of 1,732, the segment involving commercial vehicles remains a significant concern due to the severity of the impacts. Approximately 2,500 truck-related injuries are documented annually in the state, often concentrated along major freight corridors like I-40 and I-85.

Several factors drive these statistics in North Carolina. Speeding was a factor in over 21% of all traffic fatalities in 2024, and distraction remains the single most frequently cited contributing circumstance in statewide crashes. Infrastructure pressures, particularly in the Triangle region (Raleigh-Durham), have exacerbated the issue.
