38-Year-Old Georgia Man Killed In North Carolina Car Accident

CHARLOTTE (NCVR) — Dozens of cars crashed in multiple pileups on an icy Interstate 70 as winter weather hit Colorado on Sunday morning.

Colorado State Patrol said it responded to multiple crashes on I-70 as mountain road conditions were icy with low visibility. No one was injured, but the crashes resulted in property damage.

Near milepost 130 in Eagle County, west of Gypsum, CSP said about 20 vehicles were involved in a pile-up crash reported just before 11:30 a.m. The cars have since been moved off the roadway, and plows were set to go through the area.

“Once the road is suitable for travel, emergency vehicles will begin leading vehicles through the area at slow speeds,” CSP said.

Not long after, at 11:42 a.m., more calls came in reporting another pileup of about 30 vehicles near milepost 119 in Garfield County, east of Glenwood Springs. CSP and the local sheriff’s office were working to clear the road.

Both sides of I-70 were closed in the area and have since reopened. The visibility in the area is approximately 500 feet, CSP said.

Wintry weather is expected to worsen as the day goes on in the mountains. Drivers should be prepared for possible hazardous conditions in the high country.

Drivers can use the Colorado Department of Transportation’s new I-70 webpage to learn about chain laws, find road conditions, see closure information, and more.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents occur far too frequently across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle traffic fatalities nationwide reached an estimated 31,720 in the first nine months of 2024, marking a continued upward trend from previous years and highlighting the persistent dangers on our roads.

The busy roadways of North Carolina, including major corridors like Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 74, are hotspots for potential collisions. Cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh see some of the highest rates of fatal accidents in the state, with Charlotte reporting 11.2 deaths per 100,000 residents and Raleigh at 3.9 per 100,000.

Mirroring national patterns, North Carolina has experienced a rise in car accidents. Recent data from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles shows over 284,000 traffic crashes in a recent 12-month period, with 1,565 resulting in fatalities. In 2022, the state recorded more than 273,000 accidents, leading to over 110,000 injuries and underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.

There are various types of car accidents, but multi-vehicle collisions are among the most common and devastating. When multiple vehicles collide, the potential for severe damage and injury skyrockets—often involving three or more cars in chain-reaction crashes.

A range of factors contribute to these incidents, including distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence, reckless behavior, adverse weather conditions, wrong-way driving, and failure to follow traffic regulations.
